High-legged excavators, a special elevated machine for unloading bulk materials from railway wagons

April 6, 2026

High-legged excavators, also known as "long-legged excavators" or extended-chassis excavators, are specialized engineering machines designed for specific working conditions, with their core advantages being an ultra-high chassis, strong mobility, and high visibility.

High-legged Excavator

Core Components of a High-legged (Long-Leg) Excavator

1. Ultra-High Extended Chassis Assembly: The core "long-legged" structure, composed of heightened and reinforced outriggers, extended and widened track frames, heavy-duty travel motor, drive wheels, guide wheels, and wear-resistant track plates. The entire assembly is reinforced and welded, offering strong load-bearing capacity and torsional resistance, ensuring stability when working across heights, ditches, and truck beds. This is a key component distinguishing it from ordinary excavators.

2. Upper Body: Includes a standard slewing platform, hydraulic oil tank, diesel tank, counterweight, and a protective steel frame. Equipped with a high-strength slewing bearing, it achieves 360° rotation operation. The counterweight has been enlarged and optimized to offset the center of gravity shift caused by High-legged operations, preventing tipping.

3. High-Spec Hydraulic Power System: Composed of a main pump, main control valve, extended hydraulic hoses, lifting cylinder, traveling cylinder, and slewing cylinder. Custom-designed pressurization for the long hydraulic circuits of the outriggers ensures stable power output and smooth operation of the boom, outriggers, and traveling mechanism, suitable for heavy-duty material handling, clearing, and unloading operations.

High-Position Cab Assembly: Heightened and suspended design, equipped with anti-slip ladder, protective railings, and explosion-proof glass. Unobstructed operating visibility, suitable for unloading materials from railway carriages and high-level clearing operations; features intelligent operating handles, instrument panel, and safety warning devices; some models offer optional lifting and emergency braking functions.

5. Working Attachments: Standard configuration includes a reinforced boom, forearm, and reinforced bucket; interchangeable attachments include a grab bucket, leveling scraper, and clearing bucket. The boom is lengthened and reinforced for High-legged material handling, unloading, and leveling.

6.Safety Auxiliary and Protective Components: Includes a center of gravity monitor, tilt alarm, anti-collision limiter, oil circuit explosion-proof valve, outrigger reinforcement plates, and rust-proof and wear-resistant coating for the entire machine. Provides real-time warnings of hazardous conditions, improving safety in complex environments.

Performance Advantages:

Straddle Carrier

1. Wide Field of Visibility: High-position driving, unobstructed view, suitable for railway coal unloading and wagon cleaning.

2. Efficient Operation: Direct unloading across wagons, eliminating the need for secondary material transfer.

3. Safe and Convenient: Equipped with guardrails and ladders, simple operation, and low maintenance costs.

Main Application Scenarios:

1. Railway Loading and Unloading: Coal and ore unloading (mainstream scenario).

2. Mine Infrastructure: High-slope stripping, earthwork in complex terrain.

3. Special Projects: Construction under elevated structures and in confined spaces.
