Maximizing Railway Maintenance Efficiency: The Final Commissioning of Our Doosan 150W Wheeled Rail Excavator

May 12, 2026

Why Choose a Customized Rail Drive Chassis for Your Doosan?

In the world of railway infrastructure maintenance, time is money. Whether it’s track tamping, ballast cleaning, or emergency rescue operations, having the right equipment is crucial. Standard excavators struggle on tracks, while traditional road-rail vehicles often lack the powerful digging force required for heavy maintenance.

This is where the Railway Excavator Conversion comes into play.

Recently, our factory completed a comprehensive customization and commissioning of a Doosan DX150W wheeled excavator. By installing a high-performance Railway Drive Undercarriage, we transformed this standard wheeled excavator into a heavy-duty, dual-purpose Road-Rail Machine.

Here is an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the final debugging process and why this machine is a game-changer for railway contractors.

The Conversion: Enhancing the Doosan 150W

The Doosan 150W is already known for its powerful hydraulics and mobility. However, running on steel rails requires a specialized chassis.

We removed the standard rubber tire setup and integrated a custom Rail Bogie (Railway Chassis) System. This system allows the machine to handle the heavy axial loads of railway sleepers and tracks. Unlike tracked rail excavators which can be slow and damage the ballast, our wheeled rail version offers high-speed mobility between job sites

Key Features of Our Rail Drive Chassis

During the writing of this post, the machine was undergoing its final load test. Here are the highlights of the build:

1. Hydraulic Drive & Braking System
The machine is equipped with a robust Hydraulic Drive Motor and a specialized Rail Brake System. During commissioning, we tested the stopping accuracy on a 35‰ slope, ensuring full compliance with railway safety standards-2-8.

2. Folding Rail Wheel Assembly (Quick Conversion)
Time is wasted when vehicles get stuck at level crossings. Our undercarriage features a hydraulically controlled lifting device. The operator can lower the rail wheels and lift the road tires directly from the cab, achieving a seamless transition from highway to railway in under 60 seconds-5.

3. Optimized Stability for Heavy Lifting
Working on rails often makes the machine top-heavy. We reinforced the Undercarriage structure to lower the center of gravity. During the commissioning of the Doosan 150W, we tested the full extension of the boom and arm (fitting with a tilt bucket or grapple) without any feeling of tipping. This modification also resolves the issue of "sinking" into soft ground, a common pain point for standard wheeled excavators-1-6.

On-Site Commissioning Highlights

Last week, our engineering team conducted the final commissioning for a client heading to a Southeast Asian railway project. Here is what we checked:

Leak Test: High-pressure testing of all new hydraulic hoses added for the rail drive.

Steering Test: Calibrating the steering logic while on rail (reversing steering direction is tricky but mastered on this Doosan 150W).

Attachment Test: Fitting the machine with a Railway Tie Grapple  and Tilt Bucket to handle multiple job site roles-8-10.

Why Convert with Us?

Many workshops offer welding services, but we provide engineering. We do not simply "weld steel wheels" onto your excavator. Our kit includes a complete suspension system and hydraulic circuit modification (using the machine's existing auxiliary hydraulics, controlled via a solenoid valve)-2.

We are located in Jining City, Shandong Province — the engineering machinery capital of China. We have successful export cases to hard-working environments like Russia, Australia, and South America.
